How Flingo Hit 900K Downloads Without Running Ads

How Flingo Grew to 900K Downloads Without Spending a Rupee on Ads

Hi, I’m Mofidul Islam, founder of Flingo, an Indian dating app with about 900,000 cumulative downloads.

Rather than trying to compete with much larger dating platforms through expensive advertising, I focused on building an acquisition engine around SEO, app-store optimization and product engineering. The growth described in this story was achieved without running ads or paid acquisition campaigns.

The recent results have been particularly encouraging.

166K Google Search Clicks For Flingo in Three Months

According to Google Search Console, Flingo’s website generated 166K Google Search clicks from 1.39M impressions over three months, with an 11.9% average click-through rate and an average search position of 7.5.

These search results were achieved without running paid search campaigns.

My approach was to create pages around keywords and search intent directly relevant to the product, rather than publishing generic high-volume content.

AI helped me accelerate the process, but it was not simply a matter of generating hundreds of articles.

I used Claude Code to build pages around relevant keywords, an SEO audit skill from Skills.sh to identify issues, and separate pre-deployment and post-deployment SEO checklists. After deployment, I used Google Search Console data to understand which pages and queries were performing and iterated from there.

The important lesson was that AI accelerated execution, while search intent, technical SEO, measurement and iteration created the growth.

Google Play Explore Acquisitions Increased 224%

At the same time, I worked on app-store optimization and product quality. Google Play Console reports 12.2K acquisitions through Google Play Explore, an increase of 224% during the measured comparison period. On August 16 alone, Google Play Explore generated 320 acquisitions.

I continuously experimented with the Play Store title, short description, full description, screenshots and screenshot captions.

I also treated engineering improvements as part of growth. Crash reduction, ANR improvements, startup performance and the overall user experience matter after someone discovers an app. Acquisition is much less valuable if the product does not retain the user.

SEO, App-Store Optimization and Engineering

My growth strategy eventually became three connected systems: SEO helps people discover relevant topics through Google; app-store optimization improves discovery and conversion inside Google Play; and engineering and product improvements help turn those acquisitions into active users.

Instead of paying repeatedly for every installation, the goal is to build distribution channels that continue working after the initial investment.

Flingo has now reached about 900K cumulative downloads, and I’m continuing to experiment with organic distribution, AI-assisted SEO and product-led growth.

“Bootstrapped startups do not always need to outspend larger competitors. They can build distribution that compounds.“

Evidence and Wording Note

The Google Search Console and Google Play Console screenshots supporting these figures accompany this story. The statement that the growth described here was achieved without ads refers to Flingo’s campaign activity. It does not claim that every acquisition displayed in Google Play Console is classified by Google as organic. Google’s dashboard uses its own traffic-source categories, including “Paid and direct”; the Play Store figure cited here is specifically the 12.2K acquisitions reported through Google Play Explore.
